WoW- Guide to Becoming a Watch Connoisseur

Monday, June 7th, 2010

Click here and use code “watchoftheweek” to get 10% off this week’s watches!

It has occurred to me that some people like watches, but want to learn more about them.  This week, I’m going to discount our site’s favorite watch, the H262, and offer a quick, informative guide that will help turn a watch novice into a watch connoisseur.  Hey, if John Mayer can be a “watch connoisseur”, why can’t everyone?

1.  Craftsmanship

If you want a nice watch, you need to know the breakdown of brands.  Although Bianci is our favorite designer, there are many other designers that produce very classy watches, as well.  Designing a watch is an art; therefore, you need an artist.  This artist usually produces the same quality and craftsmanship in all of their work.  So, if you see a watch and can’t identify the designer, there is not much that can insure its quality.  Sticking to our brand, we have one chief designer for all our watches and you can hold each watch to the same standard as the next.

2.  Movements

Movements, or caliber, are what those in the industry call the gears and internal mechanism of the clock.  The movements are usually measured in linges, or in millimeters.  I don’t know what linges are, so check it out here.

There are basically 2 countries that export movements, Japan and Switzerland.  In my opinion, they both offer great value.  Swiss movements are more prestigious because their craftsmanship is supposed to be intricate and careful.  Japanese movements are just as efficient, but they are known for mass producing for less cost, so in turn it translates to a less expensive watch.

There are 2 types of mechanical movements, manual and automatic.  Manual watches are more so, a thing of the past.  They must be wound daily because the mainspring’s energy only lasts for one day.  Automatic watches are used in most watches today.  They do not need battery because they run off the movement of your wrist, which is awesome.  Adding to their awesomeness, most of the casebacks are transparent, so you can actually see the movements.  Some watches are a hybrid between the 2 and run off battery, these watches are usually recommended to be cleaned and serviced every 4-5 years.

3. Price

Most people believe that if you are a watch connoisseur, you want to get good, quality timepieces that exude luxury, but this is not the case.  A watch connoisseur is not blinded by the dazzling name, the connoisseur does his homework.  They just want good, quality timepieces that will last and look nice.  So, since I’m not a millionaire, I like to do my research and make sure I’m buying great looking watches with good value.  For example, I take 2 similar watches, compare them, andfind that they are both great watches, but one costs $5,000 and one costs $500, more often than not, I will purchase the one for $500.

There are many aspects to research before understanding everything about watches, but these 3 points will give you solid anecdotes to talk about at your next yacht party.  This week’s watch of the week comes from our Bianci Ceramic Collection.  It was designed by our chief designer, with Swiss movements and is easily comparable to the quality and elegance of timepieces that are 10x the price.  I will also discount it 10% for this entire week.
